A night of sharing the wine trends for 2018

February 2, 2018

Yesterday we had a fantastic night with our wine friends in Highams Park. Our monthly vinous meeting was this time dedicated at sharing the trends for 2018. The promise of an evening packed with delicious wines and the insight on what are going to be the rising stars in wine lists across restaurants in months to come.

The insights came from our local wine expert, Joan, from years gained as Head of Buying and Sourcing in various companies including Majestic Wine and Naked Wines.

The event kicked off with a Hollywood related wine in the form of a magnum of sparkling Fiol. This Italian wine was selected and launched in the UK four years ago when Joan met with Gian-Luca and decided to get it in the portfolio of a large distributor. The surprise came when Gian-Luca rerelease a few months later that he was dating the movie star Jessica Chastain of Zero dark thirty fame. They are now married and Fiol is Chastain's fav sparkling in magnum and it is also Pantry's.

We also had the first true social media wine from Portugal in the form of an enticing blend of Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira that offered the option of getting the experience beyond the wine label and so we did. An spontaneous instagram and facebook was created on the bottle.

After several wines and the stories behind them and the link with the trends, we finished with two loved wines by Pantry. We had a new offering from Itata in the south of Chile where an interred winemaker is taking a 100 year old vineyard with Pais, a grape until recently completely forgotten, to make an elegant and succulent red wine. We also had a pure offering from Jura from Monsieur Rousset and his Pinot Noir Poulssard which became a discovery in its own.
